Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)

MMRDA with the assistance of World Bank under MUTP (Mumbai Urban Transport Project) had initiated a Comprehensive Transportation Study for Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This is for the first time such a study has been initiated covering all modes of transport to address the transport problems of the commuters in MMR. MMRDA appointed M/s LEA International Limited, Canada in joint venture with LEA Associates South Asia Pvt. Limited, India to carry out the study on January 2005. The objectives are :-
  • Identify travel patterns of the residents, businesses and associated transport modes of MMR
  • Develop a comprehensive Transportation model to test alternative land use / transportation strategies
  • Formulate long term transportation strategies for MMR – 2031
  • Evolve phased investment programme – 2016
In line with the above objectives of the study the consultant work is expected to cover following areas of activity
  1. Collection/ updating of household, land use and travel demand data
  2. Development and operation of an urban transport model
  3. Formulation of a transport strategy
  4. Identification of a phased program of transport investments and management proposals
  5. Training and knowledge transfer to MMRDA and other agencies
  6. Assist MMRDA in public consultation process

The total duration of the study is 18 months.

 

The study started on February 2005 and is going on smoothly. All main surveys and analysis completed. The Urban Transportation model development and recommendations for 2016 and 2031 is going on and is expected to be completed quickly.

The following activities as per the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the study are completed

  • All main surveys including 66,000 household interview surveys.
  • Establishing baseline data.
  • Transport network coding for strategic and detailed level.
  • Review of 1994 CTS and other planning reports of MMR.
  • Alternate long term land use employment and population strategies.
  • Skill and knowledge transfer to the core team of MMRDA in three levels.
  • Public consultation including identification of stake holders and pre transport strategy consultation.
  • Strategic planning model
  • Long term Transport Strategies
  • Medium term investment program
  • Institutional and Resource mobilization aspects.
